Bertalan Fodor, or, as fondly known, Fodor Berci, one of the veterans and legends of Tirgu Mures water polo, has passed away a few days ago.
He was born in 1922, and in the 1940s he was one of the best water polo players of the town.
He began to swim at the age of six, then switched to water polo and won ten silver medals with the country's various teams.
He played together with the great names like Attila Kelemen , János Bordy , Károly Rettegi , Ferenc Simon, Gábor Nagy , Gyula Deák and many others. The great László Daróczi was their coach and the Vointa pool was the scene of the matches that attracted huge crowds on a regular basis.
He obtained his baccalaureate in Budapest, then, due to his Jewish origin, from 1939 until the end of the war he was banned from sport and also sent to labour camp.
After the end of the war, in just two years he returned to his peak form and already played in the big league. But as the Fodor brothers had a furniture shop in the city centre, the communists labelled him, too a kulak, and was again banned from sport - but fortunately he could play in Bucharest.
In 1964 he emigrated to the USA, more precisely settled in New York, where he owned a furniture upholstery shop for almost 30 years. He played water polo and swam as a member of the hugely famous New York Athletic Club, winning countless competitions in his age group. He most recently visited them in September 2011 during one of the club reunions.
He moved back to his home town after the Romanian Revolution, and was known to the very last days as an instantly recognisable, impeccably dressed old gentleman.
He was a superb story teller and some of us had the privilege of listening to the many decades of swimming and water polo anecdotes in some of the atmospheric cafes of the town, which he liked to frequent. The local water polo junior championships also had him several times in the audience, and he watched with great joy the young new talents' epic battles at the Olympic pool of the town.

Bertalan Fodor, sau cum a fost cunoscut cu drag de mulți, Fodor Berci, unul din legendele mari ale polo-ului mureșean, a încetat din viață la vârsta de 94 de ani.
S-a născut în 1922, şi în anii '40 a fost unul dintre cei mai de seamă poloişti din oraş.
A început să facă nataţie la vârsta de şase ani, apoi a trecut la polo pe apă, câştigând zece medalii de argint cu diferite echipe din ţară.
A jucat împreună cu cele mai mari nume, ca Attila Kelemen , János Bordy , Károly Rettegi , Ferenc Simon, Gábor Nagy , Gyula Deák şi mulţi alţii. Marele László Daróczi a fost antrenorul lor, şi meciurile se desfăşurau la ştrandul Voinţa, atrăgând în mod regular mulţimea.
Şi-a luat bacalaureatul la Budapesta, dar din cauza originii evreieşti i s-a interzis să facă sport din 1939 până la terminarea râzboiului, şi a fost trimis şi în tabără de muncă. După terminarea războiului în numai doi ani şi-a revenit la forma sa competiţională şi a jucat in echipa mare.
Dar din cauză că fraţii Fodor aveau un magazin de mobilă în centrul oraşului, comuniştii de atunci i-au etichetat kulak şi iar i s-a interzis sportul. Din fericire, a putut să joace la Bucureşti.
În 1964 a emigrat în SUA, mai precis s-a stabilit în New York, unde timp de aproape 30 de ani a fost proprietarul unui magazin de tapiţerie. A jucat polo şi a înotat ca membru la faimosul New York Athletic Club, câştigând numeroase competiţii în grupa sa de vârstă. Cel mai cecent a vizitat clubul în septembrie 2011, cu ocazia unei reuniuni ale clubului.
Dânsul s-a mutat înapoi în orașul său natal după Revoluție, și a fost cunoscut ca un gentleman totdeauna impecabil îmbrăcat, care frecventa cafenele cu atmosferă din oraș și povestea despre multe decenii de polo și înot. Unii dintre noi am avut privilegiul să ascultăm nenumăratele sale anecdote din lumea înotului și poloului pe apă. A vizitat de multe ori și meciurile juniorilor din orașul nostru, și a urmărit cu drag bătăliile epice din apa bazinului olimpic.

Fodor Bertalan, vagy ahogyan legtöbben ismerték, Fodor Berci, a város egyik legnagyobb vízilabda legendája elhunyt 94 évesen.
1922-ben született, az 1940-es években Marosvásárhely egyik legjobb vízilabdázója volt.
Hat évesen kezdett úszni, később az úszásról vízilabdára tért át, tíz ezüstérmet szerzett az ország különböző csapataival. Együtt játszott vele Kelemen Attila, Bordy János, Rettegi Károly, Simon Ferenc, Nagy Pocó Gábor, Deák Gyula és sokan mások a nagy nevek közül.
A nagy Daróczi László volt az edzőjük és a Vointa strandon zajlottak a nagy tömegeket vonzó meccsek. Budapesten érettségizett, de 1939-től a háború végéig zsidó származása miatt nem sportolhatott és munkatáborba is került. A háború befejezése után két év alatt visszatért régi formájába és mar a nagycsapatban játszott.
Ekkor azonban az akkori kommunisták kuláknak bélyegezték, mivel a főtéren a Fodor testvéreknek bútor boltjuk volt - szerencsére Bukarestben játszhatott, de otthon eltiltották a sporttól. 1964-ben Amerikába, pontosabban New York-ba vándorolt ki, ahol közel 30 évig kárpitos üzlete volt.
Ott a fogalommá vált New York Athletic Club-nál játszott és úszott korcsoportjában, tobb versenyt sorra nyerve. A klub találkozója alkalmából 2011 szeptemberében ismét ott járt.
Hazaköltözött a romániai forradalom után, és mindenki kifogástalanul öltözött disztingvált úriemberként ismerte. Volt szerencsénk hallgatni, ahogy évtizedeket átfutó anekdotákkal rukkolt elő a város valamely hangulatos kávézóiban, és nagy örömmel jött el sokszor megtekinteni a város ifi csapatainak vízilabda csatáit az olimpiai medencében.
